Uncovering How Architects Can Maximize Their Relationships With Structural Engineers

Topping the List: Discussing major design changes with SEs prior to promising them to client

(August 15, 2024) Today, the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations released results from its survey of structural engineers about the best ways for architects to maximize their relationships with them. In their daily work, structural engineers closely collaborate with architects as well as building developers and owners.

The survey revealed that more than half of respondents (52 percent) indicated they can bring value to a project’s development if they are included in the initial discussions of major design changes.  Similarly, and ranking second in the survey, 45 percent of respondents indicated that engaging structural engineers early in the design process can bring value by adding different vantage points to design and development processes and assuring the entire design team has a unified understanding of design priorities.

“When I think of my favorite projects, I thumb through my mental catalog of projects that I consider successful. One thing they all have in common is that the design team worked together well, and I was engaged at an early stage to be a sounding board and resource as the design developed. This happened long before I put ‘pencil to paper’ for the structural member design,” says Kelsey Parolini, SE, Associate Principal at Buehler Engineering, Inc.

Respondents (38 percent) also noted that plan changes perceived as simple to some design professionals often have more substantial ramifications to structural design. Parolini suggests that, this too, can be remedied with early and open dialogue, helping architects navigate potential pitfalls in project cost or schedule.

“Structural engineers provide a different lens with which to identify potential obstacles, and that emphasis on collaboration can greatly benefit design and development projects,” says Michael D. Zajac, P.E., LEED AP, Senior Project Manager for Simpson Gumpertz & Heger.

NCSEA, in partnership with its member organizations, supports practicing structural engineers to be highly qualified professionals and successful leaders. Its We SEE Above and Beyond campaign illustrates how structural engineers create safe, vibrant, and resilient communities and provides valuable resources for architects and building owners.
